Handcross Primary

PE, SPORTS & physical activity

Our school believes that PE, sport and physical activity, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a vital contributor to a pupil’s physical and mental development and well-being.

The school provides all pupils with the full entitlement of at least two hours of high quality Physical Education a week and is aims to increase this further through the provision of a broad range of after school physical activities.

All pupils in the school have equality of opportunity in terms of curriculum balance, curriculum time, use of resources, use of facilities and access to extra-curricular activities.

Curriculum

At Handcross Primary School, all children receive 2 hours of PE and sport taught by Steve, our specialist PE coach from South Coast Sports, and class teachers. The sessions cover the statutory aims and subject content required by the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Our overview plan shows the PE lesson focuses for each year group, throughout the academic year. By providing a range of focuses activities and sports, children are able to develop their skills as they progress throughout Handcross primary school.

Our PE Progression Map displays the journey we aim for our children to follow from Year R to Year 6. Lessons, activities and experiences are planned and delievered by staff, to ensure all children have opportunities to develop these key skills, before transitioning to secondary school.

Swimming

Handcross Primary School provides swimming lessons for all children in Year 4 at an offsite pool. The lessons focus on developing the children’s confidence in the water, awareness of how to be safe, as well as their ability to swim using a range of strokes.

Additional catch-up sessions are offered in the Summer term for children in Year 5 and 6 to support them in meeting the end of Key Stage 2 National Curriculum swimming aims. Last year, 67% met the aims and we aim to increase this percentage this academic year.

School Games Mark

PLATINUM School Games Mark Award for PE

Platinum School Games Award

The School Games Mark is a national awards scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school. It requires schools and children to develop and sustain the following values in PE, sport and physical activity: respect, determination, passion, honesty, teamwork and self-belief.

In 2018-19, Handcross Primary School achieved the PLATINUM  award for our PE, sports and physical activity provision. This award has been renewed for 2020-21 and we will reapply for it in 2021-22.

Mid Sussex Active (MSA)

Mid Sussex Active (MSA) is an organisation which supports schools with provision of festivals and competitions, professional development and providing community club links. They provide a range of festivals and competitions throughout the school year, within the local area. The festivals focus on encouraging less-active and/or less competitive children to try new sports and develop skills. Events include: boccia, sportshall athletics, Boys/Girls Get Active and Inclusion festivals. The competitions , where children get to compete against other schools, allows them to apply their skills from lessons in a more competitive environment. Events include: tag rugby, Quikstick hockey, cross country, netball and football. Children from a range of year groups and abilities are provided with opportunities to attend the fixtures – they are always great fun!

All sports events are reported by the children. Please see our PE News page for more information and images about our previous events.

Extra-curricular Clubs

We aim for every child in Years 1-6 to take part in at least one physical activity club each week. Our wide range of sports and physical activity clubs are tailored to the childrens interests and are run by South Coast Sports, Teaching Assistants or external companies. They include: Netball, Street Dance, Infant & Junior Football, Stoolball, Athletics, Infant Sports Skills, Infant & Junior Multi Sports, Kinball & Boccia (selected pupils), Cricket (before school) and Go Wild. Visit our Clubs page to view our full list of After-School & Morning Clubs.

Other Events and Achievements

Pupils are actively encouraged to share achievements from sports/physical activities they are involved in outside school. These are celebrated in Friday Celebration Assemblies, as well as on the PE noticeboard in school.

In the Summer term, the whole school participate in a Dance-a-thon day, a whole day dedicated to trying and learning new dances, as well as Sports Day where families are invited to spectate. Year 6 children have Bike-ability lessons to help them learn how to cycle safety.

During lockdown (April – July 2020), Handcross Primary School partook in the Virtual School Games (as part of the Active Sussex). Each week, new sport challenges were assigned to children to try and complete at home and for those in school. Many of our children took part each week, helping us to achieve coming 10th out of the mid Sussex schools. We achieved the Virtual School Games award and are very proud of all of the children and families who took part during lockdown.
